Why 72 Hours Is Our Minimum Burn-In Window

Shorter tests miss failure modes that only appear after sustained thermal cycling. Here is what we have observed on the bench.

Buyers sometimes ask whether a 24-hour test suffices. For hashrate verification — confirming a delivered unit meets spec — 24 hours can be enough. For procurement decisions on new models, it is not.

Failure Modes That Appear Late

Thermal paste pump-out. Low-quality paste loses contact after repeated heat cycles. We have seen units pass a 12-hour bench test and drop 6% hashrate between hour 36 and hour 48 as paste migrates away from the die centre.

Capacitor drift on hash boards. Electrolytic capacitors near the VRM can shift characteristics under sustained load. Symptoms include micro-stutters in the hashrate log — dips of 0.3–0.8% that recover within minutes. A 24-hour window may capture one or two events; 72 hours reveals whether the pattern is systematic.

Fan bearing wear on early-production units. First-batch fans sometimes run quietly for a day and develop vibration by day three. Vibration loosens heat sink pressure over time. We listen for bearing noise at hour 48 and hour 72 as part of every full review.

What We Would Lose at 48 Hours

In our 2024 review archive, 18% of conditional-pass findings were first logged after the 48-hour mark. Cutting the window to two days would have turned those into false passes — units that looked stable on a loading dock but degraded in a rack within the first week of deployment.

Chamber vs Field Conditions

Our Jeju chamber holds 28°C ambient with controlled humidity. If your facility runs hotter, failure modes may appear sooner in the field than on our bench. Note your target ambient in the review brief and we will adjust chamber setpoints when the equipment rating allows.

When 24 Hours Is Appropriate

Hashrate verification for units from a supplier you have already reviewed at full burn-in. Spot checks within a batch where the first units passed 72-hour testing. Post-repair validation after a fan or board swap.

For everything else — especially first purchases above 0.05 PH/s — plan for the full window.
